Around the area "near" 505.

This covers a very loosely defined area mainly closeish to the apartment excluding Fawkner and Albert Parks.  I'll start with pushing the 'ish' element to the foreground!  This shows the food van element of the Queen Vic Markets on a Sunday morning.

Then into the fruit and veg area.
I always find the skyscape from the markets interesting.
I have commented in the past about the range of businesses along Commercial Rd.  I had assumed this was Prahran (as the Prahran Markets are there) but in fact the Northern side of the road are South Yarra.  I am unsure whether this joint is a respectable (?) dance hall or a site of negotiable affection  - which probably needs a sharp knife to split anyway.
This is definitely Prahran: the Square on the South side of the road.
An old building on the Square with Coles on the ground floor. (Woolies is behind me.)
More old buildings.
An interesting conjunction of businesses.  Tattoo parlour and legal offices!
A Primary School - St Kilda Park Primary School in Albert Park.
Lorikeets in the SKIPPS grounds.
Another Primary School: South Yarra, on Punt Rd.  This lych gate equivalent is a War Memorial.
Honouring Clifford Saddler VC who attended the school and got the Cross at Villers Brettoneaux.

The private sector: a horde of Wesley College students on Moubray St, inbound from a bus!
The front of a building on St Kilda Rd.
This pushes the envelope of 'near but is an interesting angle underneath the West Gate Bridge, from Westgate Park.
This next section is going to be a bit complicated as I try to explain a satnav problem.  This is a screen from Google Maps.

I have attempted (twice) to get from 505 to Sandringham, down the coast past Brighton.   Step 1 - down St Kilda Rd is OK.  Then the Google Maps satnav reels out statement 2 - I think OK - and almost immediately step 3 which I have misinterpreted bot times, and gone down the road indicated by the red arrow.  This causes the satnav to have conniptions.  (About 6 km down the road a further series of complicated instructions come forth - which certainly are an error at peak hour as they involve a right turn which is prohibited then.  A very complex set of dodges around the 'burbs then follows to get to Beach Rd.)

On the second trip I came back following the sat nav and it was very simple: Beach Road; Barkly St; St Kilda Rd.  Why was it so difficult going out?  So. on the morning of the 16th we walked down there to review the situation at leisure.  It was possible with binoculars to see the turn off to Barkly St and I think the problem is due to (1) references to Punt Rd and (2) the directive to stay in the left lane while turning right.

This area is fascinating in its social infrastructure.  On Commercial Rd, and most of the block down to Moubray St is the Alfred Hospital and related places.  Then there is Wesley College filling Moubray Street across to Punt Rd.  Close to where St Kilda and Punt Rds merge is a huge set of Jewish aged accommodation and on the way back up Punt Rd are a Freemason's Retirement Village.

There is also some very well done street art.

While not as dominant I like this owl-on-a-garage-door and the old houses on Punt Road.
Close to the corner of Punt Road and Moubray St is this part of Wesley College with the motto "Sapere aude" which translates to "Dare to know".
On our morning walk on 17 August we headed along St Kilda Rd to Toorak Rd.  The first point of interest was this art deco building  - part of a set of apartments, built in 1936. at 449 St Kilda Rd.
A very modern building across the road.
An unusual war memorial to nurses from WWII.  Frances noted in particular the wimple-style head-dress.
A very large synagogue.  Although Saturday morning it didn't seem to be operating at 0800hrs.
The synagogue with added magnolias.  Should be spectacular in a couple of weeks!
I liked all the verticals of this building site.
