Weather July 2016

Sorry this is a bit late: I have been finding (mainly) better weather elsewhere.  The following table gives the report in Gazette format - a bit different to that which appeared in hard copy as it now shows what my weather station recorded at home, rather than details for another site which I was able to access over the internet from Atherton!

In summary July seems to have been a pretty good month to be away: wet cool and windy.

Rain
Another above average month, although not so much as June.
This next chart shows the daily falls.

Falls greater than 0.5mm (to get away from decent fog being recorded as 0.2mm) occurred on 12 days.  Looking back at history (since 1993), for July the average is falls of this level being recorded on 8 days and only 1995 recorded more wet days at 15.  By the end of the month we were 47mm in front of last year.

Temperatures

The next chart shows daily maxima and minima and change over the day.

Basically a couple of cool spells followed by warm damp times.  Looking at comparisons with longer term averages:

The average maximum was a tad above the long term average but, as with June 2016 the average minimum was very much above average at positive 1.5oC  rather than negative 1.3oC.

This led me to lok at the number of frosts recorded this year.   Minima below 0oC (air frost) were recorded on 12 days and below +2oC (ground frost)  on 18 days.  While this seems pretty chilly, both values are well below the average.  The next chart shows the number of frost days recorded each month thus far in 2016 as a percentage of the average number of such days by month.
Clearly it has been a much less frosty Autumn/Winter than average.  This is probably due to it being so damp.

Humidity

As usual I have used the 3pm (1500hrs) value.
Humidity at 1500hrs didn't drop below 50% at any point in the month.  This emphasises the the cooler months of Winter achieve higher humidity levels than Summer but the average outcome for the month is only slightly above the long term average.

Wind

Basically a rather blowy month.  The maximum gust each day ...

... while looking like a cross section of the Alps, shows a draughtier picture than usual.  This is emphasised by a comparison with longer term averages.
