Parrots of the Hackett Water Tanks

Image
I went to a couple of spots in North Canberra where Swift Parrots had been seen recently (or at least in the last 3 weeks).  Unfortunately they had moved on. However I did come across a pair of Gang-gangs making nice.  I have fiddled with the exposure in the first two images At least I think they were making nice.  In view of what followed she may have been saying "You lazy sod, get down there and rip some bark off the entrance to our hollow." The next two are as taken. Exposure fiddled with for Bird-A-Day Eastern Rosella.

A different way to Canberra

Frances has a developing interest in geology and "Stories beneath our feet " had a number of references to features between Bombala and Berridale.  We had never driven the Snowy River Way so it seemed like a few ducks lined up.  As well as this innovation we decided to come via Cann River as the fuel price there was the cheapest (diesel 181.9 c/l, cf 215.9 in Mallacoota or 186.9 in Bombala) between home and Canberra.  Here is our route: about 20km and 40 minutes longer than our normal route We had taken the Pajero as:  I wanted to get a new rear light assembly as the sticky tape I had been using on it for the last 8 years was getting a bit iffy;  I wasn't sure what the road from Ando to Berridale would be like; and We might want to go into the mountains while we are in Canberra. I have added a 4th element having done the trip: the Monaro Highway from Cann River to Bombala is in very poor condition.  We were pleased we weren't taking the Mazda which isn't designed

Looking out from our place in Mallacoota we could see a high crane in Karbeethong.  I went that way on a bike ride so checked it out.  It was putting in the second half of an Anchor home. As I rode up Schnapper Point Drive I was told the road was blocked.  In reference to Karbeethong Rd it certainly was obstructed. It was a tight fit between the bushes ... .... not too much room to spare at the downhill end ... .. and little clearance to a transmission line (NBN?) over the top. The crane dropped some chains and straps down. Which blokes attached to the appropriate spots. There was a brief problem with some guttering getting in the way, but nothing that couldn't be resolved with a bit of 4x2 ... ... some tension on the straps ... .. and. of course, some cable ties! I had to leave before lift off was achieved but looking down from home the dwelling was clearly airborne and heading for its rightful place. I went past the next day and got a snap of the two half-houses joined.  They wi
