Back up the hill

We arranged to come back up to Canberra to coincide with daughter clearing out her apartment here, get the Pajero serviced and some dental appointments.   We came via Cann River as fuel prices there are way better (at the Shell servo) than anywhere else in SE Australia.

The drive to Cann and up the valley was pleasant, with a note of shock that the temperature at the foot of the ranges was 28C.  Frances thought it might have dropped a couple of degrees by Nimmitabel so predicted 26C for that metropolis while I was stunned and decided it might well stay at 28C.  (Jumping ahead, Frances was right on the money.)

After crossing the border we got some glimpses of the headwaters of the Genoa River, which was still flowing, so the Inlet won't be drying up for a while!  At Bombala the beaver dam jammed against a footbridge had disappeared and hand railings rebuilt.   Taking a quick glance the deck of the footbridge was at least a metre about the water.

We diverted to check out Black Lake, primarily to record Pied Stilt as Bird of the Day.  There were lots of waterfowl there ...

..  with 47 Shelduck, 20 Australian Shovelers, 42 Black Swans  and ....
.... 27 Pied Stilt!

The rest of the drive was unremarkable, other than the generally very calm behaviour of everyone.  At one point I noted we were in a line of 15 spaced out vehicles all chugging along at 100 kph.  Quite a few of the deciduous trees along the way (notably oaks at Bombala, poplars everywhere) had developed some autumn colour.

A relaxing return to the apartment looking out at a pleasant sunset at about 1815 hrs (I do miss daylight saving!)

The garish lights at the Northern part of Bunda St actaully looked quite interesting.
The floodlit Australian War Memorial was impressive.
