The trip back

We left the Fyshwick Markets at about 1115 hours and 33.5oC.  Our guesses of the temperature at Nimmitabel were placed with Frances going for 31oC and me for 35oC.

Going down the Monaro Highway the countryside was bleak indeed,
Past Cooma the stretch on the Snowy Mountains Highway to Nimmitabel was equally bleak - it is usually a little bit green at the end of Spring, but not this year.  Plus, despite what appeared on the live traffic site (no warning for this area) we had about 2km of pilot guided roadworks.  Grrr!
When we got to Nimmitabel the temperature was 35.5oC so I just sneaked in.  We stooped for a bogbreak at Bombala where the temperature was 38.5oC (or 101.5oF).
But wait there is more!  As we got to the Western end of Imlay Rd we hit 40oC (Frances took this photo).
By the bottom (Eastern) end of the Imlay the temperature had dropped to 31.6oC which we thought boded well for Mallacoota.  Not so: by Genoa back up to 37.5oC and still 35oC when we got home.  (It turned out the maximum for 'coota was 40.6oC which resolves to 105oF, for fans of old money.

After unpacking the car (say 1500 hrs) the temperature outside had dropped slightly to 34.1 (23% rH) while indoors showed the benefits of storm blinds and double glazing by being a pleasant 23.1oC (58% rH).

The sky was pretty murky, most likely due to some small fires off  Imlay Rd, ...
... while the very strong NWly winds (around 60kph) created a heap of whitecaps on the Inlet.
At the time of typing the temperature outside has dropped to 26.9oC and the wind has dropped to 8kph.

In the eastern Monaro there are usually only varying shades of dry, the exception being after a particularly active period of summer storms or following a vagrant east coast low. The Southern Highlands are exceptionally dry at the moment; the usually lush country around Moss Vale is as crispy as Cooma.

It seems like you spend the cool season in Canberra and the warm season in Mallacoota- good move. Though I think these days Mallacoota is getting a little too humid as SSTs in the southern Tasman Sea are getting hotter and hotter. You need to go a little further west (Wilsons Prom area) for cooler temps in summer now, where air from the Southern Ocean remains unadulterated .
