Persons at work
On our morning dog walk we often see evidence of persons being at work. Sometimes we even see the persons! These are a few images of the main work sites.
The first set are the site of Floriade. This Flower Festival will take place in September this year but as a result of the National Capital Authority puffing its chest out, work started in mid-April on carting squillions of tons of soil into the places from where soil was last year but was then removed. At a simplistic level this is an appalling waste of time and money. However in coming to a balanced view one should also consider that:
This is the view after one comes across Parkes Way.
If nly I had a use for a bobcat this one looks available for borrowing!
For some reason this part of the site was unfenced. Presumably they hire a number of fence panels and underestimated how many they'd need. Or someone else needed some hurdles and, having a truck helped themselves. Or the supplier under-delivered and made a little excess profit.
An obfuscated person. It was only on looking at the image that I noticed the equipment on the ground. Presumably this rather Neolithic kit is used to level the beds - I might have to revisit the site in working hours to check it out!
A few hundred tons of dirt awaiting the smoothing.
On the way back to our apartment we pass a demolition site. This has been happening ever since we moved to Civic but is now getting towards completion. At times the backhoes have been in very precarious potions on the pile of rubble. On this day they were dealing with a chunk of facade. The guys leaning on the car were there to hold up pedestrians when it was particularly risky that a chunk of masonry might become motile.
This is one of those times. Note the running guy, bottom left.
Down it goes!
Another ongoing saga has involved 2 Constitution Avenue, Again, ever since we have been living here these platforms have been lurking around cleaning off the building. On this morning the jib of the nearer one was particularly extended.
I think I would feel a bit nervous in this position but perhaps a limited knowledge of the principles of geometry and physics (or at least a low imagination quotient) is a core skill for this job.

- if the festival was allowed to stay on site the organisers would probably want to change the beds a fair bit to make it a new! exciting!! exciting Experience!!! each year; and
- on a Keynesian economic basis the payment of much money to the workers is probably a good help to the ACT economy; but
- the fact that the Park is like a building site for some months is hardly a good look.
