Why WOOD ducks? Why HOVER Flies
Today we had a couple of Australian Wood Ducks walk across our lawn.
So why are they called Wood ducks and not Lawn ducks? The answer lies in the trees!
A little later in the day I spotted an insect sitting on a leaf.
Quite attractive, but why is it called a hover fly? In this case the answer lies in the breeze!
Keeping on the arthropodal direction here are a couple of images of caterpillars (on Penstemons) and a moth.
I have pursued this moth all round the garden for various periods over some weeks (about 40 minutes this afternoon) and this is the closest I have come to getting an image of it. It explores various pelargoniums and roses but rarely settles for long enough to get a decent shot. (I am beginning to think of bottles with various medicinal compounds in the)m. Any suggestions as to its identification would be welcome.
